This hidden gem deep in the heart of North Annandale was formerly an old corner store. The building was bought in 2006 by Rodney Jones who set about renovating the terrace largely by hand. The interior décor is a little erratic with street art-inspired screens mixed with Italian-style frescos and antique shelving complete with trundling library ladder. Once the food arrives, though, we have eyes for little else.
The big breakfast is a thing of wonder: a veritable feast of house-made baked...

Its the little things that count in a café breakfast. Once weve found a seat at Clovers massive central table a savvy waiter addresses our most pressing need and we are furnished with fresh passionfruit and lime sodas to ward of the worst of the mid-morning heat. Something between a soft drink and a juice but with less sugar than either, its a refreshing alternative to coffee. If you prefer your beverages pip-free theres also a spectacular watermelon and orange juice that looks like a sunrise in...

Ah, the neighbourhood bistro. What a treat it is to take a night out midweek, grab that favourite bottle from the cellar (BYO Tue/Wed), get into a bit of duck, maybe a couple of oysters too, and walk away feeling like a born-and-bred Parisian. Not that Booth Street Bistro a carbon-copy French diner - though the charming renovated shopfront, banquette booths and Euro-accented floor staff does project a certain Francophile flair. This is not just another drop-in for Annandales increasingly...

The walls at this Italian newbie are lined with old style Italian ads for spaghetti and Cinzano as well as one featuring a man napping in front of a plate of foie gras with a goose on each shoulder, very sweetly kissing over his head. Its a beautifully simple room with frosted glass deco style lampshades, white walls and simple wooden furniture. If only the loud South American techno thats passing for background music would go away.
Chef Giovanni Spinazzola (ex Ecco) is doing good things on...

This town has more cafés than it knows what to do with. So why are so few of them as good as the Little Marionette? By Myffy Rigby
This Annandale café is the size of a shoebox. At first glance, it’s nought but a couple of tables and a banquette lining big open windows, and a coffee machine in the corner. Out the back there’s a room taken up with a massive roaster – the heart of the business. In a city where coffee is almost as important as breathing, this is pretty much a must in...
